THE SHERLOCK HOLMES
PIPE CLUB OF BOSTON

Keeping The Smoking Lamp Lit Since 1989

May 2021

We're Back!! For how long remains to be seen.
Yes, we are planning to meet in person for the May 2021 meeting.
If you feel comfortable attending, we'd love to see you.
Club will be open at 6:00 for those who want to buy dinner and eat there.
Official Meeting Starts at 7:00 PM - Be sure to bring a chair in case we sit outside.

President's Message

Hello All!

I cannot believe I have the opportunity to be writing a message for the Gazette! As much as a pain in the neck it is with Nelson breathing tongue bite dragon fire at me to have it done on time, and keeping it short and sweet, I did miss this opportunity to communicate the goings on in the club to you every month.
That being stated, Tuesday May 4th will be our first in person regular meeting in quite some time. Albeit the Zoom meetings are nice and proved to be extremely helpful in keeping the club going in the short term but, there nothing like being in a room filled with banter and sweet-smelling aroma from the pipe of a good friend.
I am sure by that time most of us should be fully vaccinated and feel comfortable meeting in person. For those who do not we will still provide a zoom link for members and friends who wish to attend virtually. I believe Art is bringing a “set-up” so this can be achieved. I do not know what the dinner situation is, so I suggest picking something up and bring it to the club.
No agenda has been set for the business portion of the meeting as I am sure most of us would like to take the time to enjoy the camaraderie. I know Tom has some tobacco to pass out from previous raffles and hopefully Matt will be there and bring along out 2020 pipes of the year.
Since May the 4th is typically known as Star Wars day, all members in person or virtual who either smoke a black pipe (Empire) or a white pipe (Rebels) will receive extra free raffle tickets for chances on some stuff I have been accumulating over the past months.

Should be a fun night, Hope to see many old and new friends. Be sure to bring a chair in case it's nice out, we can sit outside.

Pipe Personality: Graham Chapman

Graham Chapman (8 Jan 1941 – 4 Oct 1989) was an English comedian, writer, actor, author, and one of the six members of the British surreal comedy group Monty Python. He played authority figures such as the Colonel and the lead role in two Python films, Holy Grail and Life of Brian.
Chapman was born in Leicester and was raised in Melton Mowbray. He enjoyed science, acting, and comedy, and after graduating from Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and St Bartholomew's Medical College, he turned down a career as a doctor to be a comedian. Chapman eventually established a writing partnership with John Cleese, which reached its critical peak with Monty Python in the 1970s. Chapman subsequently left Britain for Los Angeles, where he attempted to be a success on American television, speaking on the college circuit and producing the pirate film Yellowbeard, before returning to Britain in the early 1980s.
In his personal life, Chapman was openly homosexual and a strong supporter of gay rights, and was in a relationship with David Sherlock. He was an alcoholic during his time at Cambridge and the Python years, quitting shortly before working on Life of Brian.

Riverville Murder - Chapter 22 & 23

Ok, ok! for those of you who have been hounding me for more chapters, here you go!

Previously:

“Of course. I know you well enough to trust what you say and believe you have more than a suspicion about Callan, or you wouldn’t be telling as much as you have. I’ll have to pass this request by the Police Commissioner, you know. Other than that, you have my word. Please keep me in the loop, and call if I can help. Give my best to Nancy and the boys.”

As Scott cradled the phone, a loud thump emanates from the front door. Investigating, Scott finds a bottle with a smoldering rag fuse stuck in the neck. Removing the rag, gasoline fumes rising from the bottle assault his nose. He carries his findings to the front fence and empties the gas into the dirt by the fence, then places the bottle and rag near the gate, thinking, “I’ll pick that up in the morning. One more thing for the FBI to look at.”

This Month's Tobacco Raffle

It's been a while since we've seen each other in person but for those of you who won tins at the virtual meeting I will have them with me in May if you come.  And since we haven't had any tins from G.L. Pease in a long time, this month we have two of his best blends. Both of these tins are over a year old, so they should be perfect for smoking. There will also be alternatives, and as with recent raffles, exact change ($5.00) would be appreciated.

G.L. Pease Caravan (Original Series) (2 oz. tin)
Caravan Is a classic Balkan style blend with Pease's own special touch. Smoky Cyprian latakia and a variety of wonderful Oriental tobaccos set the stage for the blend. Lemon and red Virginias provide support, while adding a hint of sweetness. Finally, just a touch of air cured leaf is added for body. Caravan is full and exotic; rich and spicy.

G.L. Pease Six Pence (Old London Series) (2 oz. tin)
Six Pence is a rich flake comprising a base of beautiful red Virginias, a generous portion of perique, and just a bit of dark-fired leaf to add body and dimension. The tobaccos are delicately kissed with a special spirit, then pressed and aged in cakes before being sliced and tinned. The taste and aroma are deep, full and satisfying, reminiscent of traditional tobaccos from long ago.
