Keeping The Smoking Lamp Lit Since 1989

October 2019

The October Meeting will take place at the usual place and time on Tuesday, October 1st at 7:00 PM.  Pre Meeting smoke from 5 pm - 6 pm at CB Perkins, Cobb Corner, Canton. Dinner at 6 pm at a local restaurant.  You can always find someone at Chinatown if you're running late.

President's Message

Happy October All!
As mentioned in the September Gazette, we visited Perretti’s for our last meeting and it certainly was worth the time and effort to trek into downtown at rush hour. As stated, I have never been there before and was thoroughly impressed with the store and selection. Not to mention the hospitality shown to us by the staff. Moving forward I propose we make a pilgrimage a couple times a year as well as our regular journeys to the Humidor in Cranston and Old Firehouse in Fall River. I feel it’s important for us to keep friendly relations with the local Brick and Mortars.
I’d really like to wrap up all the preliminary plans for the Pipe Show at the meeting.
For the Presidents special raffle. Hmmmm…. October is Polish-American Heritage month. Since they don’t play hockey anymore because the guy died who had the recipe for ice, all members who smoke a Savinelli Pipe at the meeting (Subsequently it’s Italian-American Heritage Month also. Don’t ask me how that happened.) will receive an extra ticket for the Presidents Raffle for a chance to win an item from my private collection.
We are still sending smoke signals out to, Tucker, Joe, Mike P, Dennis, Al, Steven and Anthony! Hope all is well. Please drop us a note and let us know you are OK. Also want to say hello to Jorge, don’t know if you read these still but, want you to know we are all thinking of you!

See you all Tuesday,
Kevin

Pipe Personality: Sylvester Stallone

Yo Adriane! Where's my pipe?

If you watched Rambo, you know he didn't smoke a pipe in the movie so this photo is the real deal. Stallone obviously chose to relax between takes with his pipe. He should have at least smoked a pipe with a bamboo shank don't you think?

Though research tells us that Stallone smoked cigars more than his pipe, I'm guessing it was from his association with Schwarzenegger that kept him from his briars. But there was a period in time when Sly was into his pipes and was photographed smoking numerous times in public. Some time after he abandoned his relationship with his pipes, his brother Frank auctioned off his collection on Ebay. You can see that collection on the Worthpoint.com website and if you want to sign up for a free trial you can find out how much his collection brought in (if anyone does this. please share with us). It looks like he had a few keepers there.

Biotene: Relief from Tongue Bite

I tend to be a fast smoker and prefer to smoke mostly flakes.  When you put those two together you can usually be sure that the dreaded tongue bite will rear it's ugly head from time to time.  I'm usually a two bowl a night smoker and I try to combat these bouts of bite by smoking a burley or something lighter as my second bowl and for the most part this does a good job at keepin' the bite at bay.
It was recommended to me to try coconut butter which did help to soothe the tongue a little but the application is a little clumsy and is a little hard to keep your tongue coated well for very long.  So on those days when I've indulged a little too much I found a secret weapon in Biotene.
Biotene is a product for dry mouth but has a great soothing agent.  It comes in a liquid or a convenient spray for when your on a road trip to a pipe smoking event where you tend to smoke more than usual but I've found the liquid to be more effective.  It also comes in a gel which I have not tried yet but sounds like it would be effective.  I generally use Biotene after brushing my teeth, just squirt a little in your mouth and let it coat your tongue for a minute or so then swish around a bit to help sooth your gums and cheeks as well.  If I had a particularly bad case of the burn I will also use Biotene the following morning and sometimes before smoking the next night.
So if you suffer from occasional tongue bite, stay cool and give Biotene a try.  Your tongue will thank you for it. Check it out.

Riverville Murder - Chapter 8

Previously:

Byrne takes a swallow, puffs on his pipe and says,  Seems there is a suspected mole working here. according to the C street boss. His name is Sean Keogh, or so he says. Could be anything, really. We are to keepan eye on him and investigate his background, as much as we can, without raising suspicion with anyauthorities. I’m to pick up a dossier on him tonight. We’ll meet here tomorrow at one-o’clock, look it over anddecide where to go with it.”

“I suppose they will want us to arrange hisdisappearance should we find out he’s dirty,” Mc Dougalresponds.

“Now, let’s not be think’n of that as yet. A heap of work must be done first. Then it’s the boss’s decisionnot ours, thank the good Lord.”

This Month's Tobacco Raffle

This month we have two very special limited edition tins. Both sold out almost immediately upon release. What makes things even better is that if you don't win, you'll get a second chance - each of these will also be part of the holiday raffle! (As usual, we'll also have aromatic alternatives.)

Cornell and Diehl Small Batch Sun Bear (2 oz.)
A blend of the finest red and bright Virginias balanced by Basma leaf from 2014 and Izmir Orientals from 2013. South Carolina garden-grown honey — harvested from the personal beehives of C&D's head blender, Jeremy Reeves — combines with a whisper of silver tequila and elderflower to augment the fruity and floral notes of the choice Orientals and Virginias. This is a numbered limited edition of 4500 tins.

Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader Special Edition with Perique (50g)
Samuel Gawith's Squadron Leader Special Edition (50 gram) Squadron Leader is a quintessential, all-day English blend of Latakia, Turkish, and Virginia tobaccos. Its original recipe, however, dates back to 1925 and incorporated Perique. This 2019 reissue of the original recipe, limited to 4500 numbered tins, is still very much an English blend, but the Perique adds a subtly sweet and spicy aftertaste for a slightly fuller, more nuanced variation.
