President's Message

Hi All,

Summer is finally winding down and let’s hope it’s not to uncomfortable at the club this month. I welcome the cooler nights as always.
We learned that former member and Treasurer Rick Frederics passed away last week.  My heart goes out to all the members who knew Rick. I never had the pleasure of knowing the man. From what I gather he was a kind and gentle man and will be sadly missed.
I feel we are at a stale mate, covid has wreaked havoc on our attendance. Although we still get great participation it was nice when we had a larger crowd. We lost many due to attrition, health issues, moving, work, etc. We should think about trying to get more to enjoy our fellowship.
Couple of dates to remember…The SHPC Annual Cookout is on September 18th, we hope you will make it.  And The Graywoodie Pipe Show on Saturday, October 1st. I am hoping to attend both and was also thinking about visiting Perretti’s in October or November. I lost track of the Members Favorite Mystery Tobacco and can’t remember if it’s in September or October.
September is the beginning of the local apple scene….All those who smoke an apple shaped bowl pipe at the meeting will get a chance at the President’s Raffle.

See you Tuesday,  Kevin

The Case of the Duplicitous Pallete

by Ernie Whitenack

Previously:

“I’m fine, Allan. I’m concerned that I’m overstepping my authority with this copied art thing. Matt told me to take one day and then send a Cablegram to Sullivan. My gut tells me this is a massive international operation we’re looking at. Actually, it’s not a swindle. By all reports, the copies are nearly perfect. They are, however, copies of stolen art. I think the one the New York FBI is looking into is just the beginning of a worldwide effort to sell many copies of various ripped-off artworks. I will eventually have to tell Matt what I’m doing. Either I’m correct, or I’m fired.”

“You’ve never been wrong since I’ve known you,” Allan said. “If you don’t trust your judgment on this one, drop it now and send the cable. If Frank Gray feeds you anything to substantiate your intuition, you can always pick it up again. If I were you, I’d keep it to myself for a while longer. At least until Frank contacts you.”

This Month's Tobacco Raffle

This month we have tins from two of the oldest tobacco houses - James Fox and Robert Lewis.

James J. Fox Provost Mixture
James J. Fox Provost Mixture is a blend that has around for over a century, and is a very traditional type of English Cavendish blend. Made of select Virginias and toasted Cavendish, it has more flavor and strength than the contents would indicate. Some people notice a faint hint of Latakia, though that's not described in the contents, and may be the result of the fire-curing of the Cavendish.

Robert Lewis' Orcilla Mixture
Robert Lewis' Orcilla Mixture is a classic Oriental pipe tobacco mixture, featuring Turkish leaf, Latakia, Virginias, and a touch of Perique in a ribbon-cut blend. A favorite among pipe smokers for over a century, Orcilla Mixture is exceptionally smooth and balanced — perfect as the first smoke of the day.
