President's Message

Hi All,

Sorry for the short message this month but I was not feeling that well for a few days and it really put me behind on some work as well as being a busy time of year around the yard and my daughters schedule has just been brutal. I hope all is well with you and maybe many have made the switch to your summertime blend. The weather has certainly been perfect for an outside cool evening smoke.

Not much on the agenda this month as I think most business had been attended to. We still need to get The Humidor set up and I would love to take another ride to Hartford over the summer. We can discuss at the meeting.

For some reason that I can’t explain I have been looking at “Cutty Style” pipes. I have a few in my collection and not really planning a purchase but I have been more and more intrigued with the shape as of late. So, all those who smoke a Cutty at the next meeting will receive a ticket for the President’s Raffle.

See you Tuesday.

The Social History of Smoking: Audio Book

This work tells the history of smoking in England from the social point of view. Thus it does not deal with the history of tobacco growing or tobacco related manufacture, but is rather the story of how smoking has fitted in with the fashions and customs throughout the ages, and the changes in the attitude of society towards smoking. (Summary by Maikki). We will add a new chapter each month for your listening pleasure.  Chapters are not all read by the same reader.

  1. The First Pipes of Tobacco Smoked in England
  2. Tobacco Triumphant: Smoking Fashionable and Universal
  3. Tobacco Triumphant (continued) Sellers of Tobacco and Professors of the Art of Smoking
  4. Cavalier and Roundhead Smokers

This Month's Tobacco Raffle

During a recent trip to Portland, Oregon, I had the pleasure of visiting Rich's Cigar, one of the finest smoke shops I'd ever seen.  Of course, I picked up a few tins, two of which are the Samuel Gawith blends featured in the June raffle.  Yes, there will be alternatives, but why pass up a chance to grab one of these uncommon flakes?

Samuel Gawith Kendal Cream Deluxe Flake
Samuel Gawith Kendal Cream Deluxe Flake is a selection of blended burley and Virginias that offers a mild and creamy smoke from a medium density flake. With an added essence (a light topping which reviewers couldn't seem to pinpoint - Lakeland? Geranium?  Whiskey?  A combination of them all?), the pipe smoker who derives pleasure from an easy to rub out flake will certainly enjoy Kendal Cream Flake.

Samuel Gawith Balkan Flake
Samuel Gawith Balkan Flake is a beautifully formed dark flake of pressed Virginias and a generous helping of Latakia (it has been compared to Full Virginia Flake, with the addition of Latakia). Relax and enjoy this medium strength tobacco with its "smokey" flavour and cool, smooth characteristics.
