Pipe Personality: Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stephen Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) was an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer, and one of the most influential guitarists in the revival of blues in the 1980s.
Vaughan was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He began playing guitar at the age of seven, inspired by his older brother Jimmie.
Vaughan's admiration for his brother Jimmie resulted in him trying different instruments such as the drums and saxophone. In 1961, for his seventh birthday, Vaughan received his first guitar, a toy from Sears with Western motif. Learning by ear, he diligently committed himself, following along to songs by the Nightcaps, particularly "Wine, Wine, Wine" and "Thunderbird". He listened to blues artists such as Albert King, Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters, and rock guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as jazz guitarists including Kenny Burrell. In 1963, he acquired his first electric guitar, a Gibson ES-125T, as a hand-me-down from Jimmie.

This Month's Tobacco Raffle

Since our annual meeting is a special event, we've got two special tobaccos from Ken Byron Ventures, packed in 2 oz. sealed bags.  As always, we'll also have great alternatives.

Hand of Götz (2 oz pouch)
Hand of Götz
is a full strength and flavor Latakia mixture with European style Latakia, dark Virginia, fire cured Virginia, the Virginia from Van Gogh, and Turkish Orientals.  This blend is very limited due to import sourcing of some Virginia.
Uzumaki (2 oz pouch)
Uzumaki
is a blend of
Virginia and fire cured Kentucky grades formed into rope and cut into loose coins.  It is further described as "Dark little swirls of tobacco inspired by our love of Euro style Virginia ropes. Matured until ripe."

The Social History of Smoking: Audio Book

This work tells the history of smoking in England from the social point of view. Thus it does not deal with the history of tobacco growing or tobacco related manufacture, but is rather the story of how smoking has fitted in with the fashions and customs throughout the ages, and the changes in the attitude of society towards smoking. (Summary by Maikki)

We will add a new chapter each month for your listening pleasure.  Chapters are not all read by the same reader.

    Preface

1. The First Pipes of Tobacco Smoked in England

2. Tobacco Triumphant: Smoking Fashionable and Universal
