President's Message

Gobble Gobble,

It’s almost the time for turkey and all the trimmings and, maybe a bowl or two of Perretti’s Thanksgiving Blend or maybe some of C&D’s We Three Kings, better yet if you have any cellared some famed Christmas Cheer which to be honest never really wowed me. Whatever you choose, just try to take some time to relax and reflect on all we have been through as a club and society in general over the past 2 years. And that most of it is behind us now.  It’s a good feeling to know that we are on course to have our Holiday extravaganza at the December meeting.
I have a fresh supply of cobs from our friends at Missouri Meerschaum. They will once again be our tool to blind taste and comment on a favorite blend of tobacco brought in by one of our members. Past President Eric Kahn will provide the weed. You bring a good supply of matches. This is our second installment of this activity, and we should plan another for January. Any volunteers?
We have not done a hat night in a while and the long-term forecast shows cool weather on our meeting night. So, all those who wear a hat (baseball hats not considered) will get an extra raffle ticket for a chance in the Presidents Raffle.

My best wishes to you and yours for a peaceful Thanksgiving.

Spud's Addiction - by Constant Latakia

It was late fall in 1938, a Saturday afternoon, to be exact, and the neighborhood boys were coming home from the movies along a path running between the railroad tracks and the river, something their fathers suggested they not do. For safety, fathers recommend the sidewalks, even though it isn’t near the fun.

Along with the boys is Spud, an odd cross of several canine breeds resulting in a joyful and friendly forty-two pounds of pooch. Spud somehow knows when the show lets out and manages to meet the boys each Saturday, primarily to run back and forth from the front to the rear as they walk home along the narrow path. As the boys get closer to home, they move off and go their separate ways, but Spud always stays with his boy.

At that time of year, the neighborhood is often gray with the smoke of burning leaves on a Saturday, and the smell is everywhere. Spud always walks with his nose in the air, smelling the smoke as if trying to detect the individual species of the burning leaves.

Riverville Murder - Chapter 32 & 33

The wire then revealed Callan cursing again at Scott and telling them how much he regretted his man failing to kill him, that he is hoping to get another try very soon. He tried softening that by bragging how he took care of the squealing Simmons kid. They were quiet for a while before Callan told Atkins to contract some experienced thieves to break into the warehouse and get the guns. He will not tolerate failure. Callan then told Atkins to ask his dad for help if he can’t do it himself, and while he was at it, to find a reliable hit man for that Wadsworth bastard.

This Month's Tobacco Raffle

It's Esoterica time!  As usual, we'll have some very tempting alternatives...
Margate (2 oz. tin)
Margate is a classical English mixture done in the "old style" of many of the fine tobaccos that have now disappeared from the market place. Choice Orientals and generous quantities of premium Cyprian latakia keynote this rich, full bodied blend. A well balanced, robust and eminently satisfying smoke.
Dorchester (2 oz. tin)
Dorchester is a special formulation of six light Virginias plus golden and dark Virginias with air-cured leaf and a pinch of Louisiana perique. Easy burning is ensured by the carefully selected cut. The perique balances the Virginias; for the discerning palate.
