Keeping The Smoking Lamp Lit Since 1989

July 2020

The Sherlock Holmes Pipe Club of Boston will RECONVENE at the usual place on Tuesday, July 7th.  Unsure about the pre-meeting smoke at Perkins but some will be a Chinatown for dinner around 6 PM.  Looking forward to seeing you all!!

President's Message

Hi Group!
It seems like forever but, I am happy to be writing this to inform you that the club is open and we will be having out first gathering since March and will take place on Tuesday July 7 at the usual time. I am unsure of meet ups before at CB Perkin’s but, I am going to try and grab some dinner at Chinatown.
I’d like to thank Andrew for hosting the Zoom meet-ups as they proved to be a welcome format during the distancing rules. We may want to make an addition to the by-laws to adopt virtual meetings as an approved method for voting etc. I realize we already we made some emergency decisions via that platform because of the uncertainty of when we could meet again but, we should have a firm policy in place especially on the required number necessary to be electronically present to vote on behalf of the club. Also, a shot out to Derick for offering his shop as an alternative meeting space if this distancing rules were going to be extended. This is all new to us and I have a feeling it is not the last time this will happen. The government and states appear to be comfortable with shutting down in the case of questionable safety for citizens.
Another item that has been brought to my attention is that some of us have fallen behind on some payments (either club pipes or dues) owed to the club. In response to this I have worked with Dennis to add a payments tab to the web site. There you can make any payment via PayPal due to the club efficiently, safely, and discreetly.
Cannot wait to see everyone next week but, if you are still concerned with distancing I totally understand and look forward to seeing you at a future gathering. To our friends we have not seen in a while please take some time and drop us a note that you are well.
Presidents raffle will we easy this month, show up and get a ticket!

See you Tuesday, KC

Pipe Personality: Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell (March 3, 1847 – August 2, 1922) was a Scottish-born inventor, scientist, and engineer who is credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone. He also co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885.

Bell's father, grandfather, and brother had all been associated with work on elocution and speech and both his mother and wife were deaf, profoundly influencing Bell's life's work. His research on hearing and speech further led him to experiment with hearing devices which eventually culminated in Bell being awarded the first U.S. patent for the telephone, on March 7, 1876. Bell considered his invention an intrusion on his real work as a scientist and refused to have a telephone in his study.

Many other inventions marked Bell's later life, including groundbreaking work in optical telecommunications, hydrofoils, and aeronautics. Although Bell was not one of the 33 founders of the National Geographic Society, he had a strong influence on the magazine while serving as the second president from January 7, 1898, until 1903.

Riverville Murder - Chapter 15

“Very efficient, Scott. We can use you at Interpole, if you are interested.”
“No thanks. I like what I’m doing just fine. Do you know anything about the destination for the arms on the Dolphin? There is a chance, albeit a small one, that the Dolphin could escape the U.S. Coast Guard patrols.”
“Ulster and the Provisional IRA, without a doubt. If the Dolphin does escape, we’ll grab them at sea. Through friends in Ulster, we have learned the name of the freighter that is to meet the Dolphin. And, be it a fact, that ship has already left port, as have two fast chase-destroyers of the Irish Navy. We hope to capture the Dolphin, should it get that far, along with the freighter and its captain. If you folks get the Dolphin, we will certainly bring in the freighter’s captain for a long talk. He, and the ship, are under foreign registry. I just hope we can hold on to them. So, you can see that we’ve been watching the North American weather as well.”
“Looks like things are going well all around. I’ll call you again regarding the Dolphin so you can alert your navy if the boat escapes the coast guard. Oh yes, and for cooperating thoroughly, Jim Hurley will probably be deported, rather than serve time in a federal prison. He will be sent directly to Dublin under guard of a federal marshal.”
“I’ll be waiting for him to deplane and happily clamps the cuffs on, of that you can be sure. There must be outstanding warrants on him. If not in the North, surly here in the Republic.”

2020 Club Pipe Update

Due to some issues surrounding the band on the Merchant Service pipe we have decided to hold off on this pipe until another time. In its place we have agreed to select a pipe from Scott Klein's collection. Scott was one of two options when we first started talking about the 2020 Club Pipe and he is back on the table.

Please see images of the pipes to choose from on the left and email Tim directly (no need to reply all) ranking your preference from 1-4. The pipe with the most number 1 votes will be chosen as the 2020 Club Pipe. Please send your reply as soon as possible so that Tim can compile the results and bring them to the upcoming meeting and get the ball rolling since we've lost a little time while dealing with Merchant Service.

As always, thanks to Tim's tireless working in bringing us a new club pipe each year.  As you can imagine, it is not always an easy task to complete.

This Month's Tobacco Raffle

To help kick off our in-person meetings with a bang, we've got two tins from Brebbia featuring long-gone SYRIAN Latakia. We ask one favor - please bring EXACT CHANGE ($5.00) to the meeting for the raffle. As always, we'll have non-latakia alternatives.

Brebbia Latakia Flake (50g) A delightful, simple blend combines sweet Virginia and Cypriot Latakia to produce a mellow, "all-day" English. Note, that this has been reissued with Syrian Latakia, but our raffle tin is the original Syrian formula.

Brebbia Balkan (50g) is a full bodied blend of finest Oriental leaves, dark fired Kentucky, Louisiana perique, and 40% of Syrian latakia. This, too has been reissued with Cyprian Latakia, but again, our raffle tin is the original Syrian formula.

In case you miss any information or just want to give us feedback, please feel free to contact us.
