President's Message
Hey Gang,
Hope this message reaches you in good health and at least a ½ full bowl.
We had a great time Celebrating IPSD on two fronts. We visited both the Old Fire House and The Humidor. Both proved to be gracious hosts and a great time was had by all. We always look forward to visiting and spending time with our friends from the local Brick and Mortars. When you can please patronize and support them.
Reminder that this month is nominations for the top 4 offices in the club. Please consider putting your name in the hat. New blood and fresh ideas will keep our club strong. Plus, I ain’t gonna live forever.
Please bring extra coinage as I am still trying to arrange a visitor who may be bringing an assortment of pipes.
Finally, this month brings us St. Patrick’s Day. To stay in fashion with the Leprechaun, all those who bring and smoke a Churchwarden or close facsimile there of will get an extra ticket for the Presidents Special Raffle. Bonus Ticket if you bring a Peterson Churchwarden!!
See you all Tuesday!!
All my best, Kevin
Pipe Personality: Nigel Bruce
William Nigel Ernle Bruce (4 February 1895 – 8 October 1953) was a British character actor on stage and screen.
Bruce was the second son of Sir William Waller Bruce, 10th Baronet and his wife Angelica Lady Bruce, daughter of General George Selby, Royal Artillery.
He was best known for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in a series of films and in the radio series The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes). Bruce is also remembered for his roles in the Alfred Hitchcock films Rebecca and Suspicion.
Nigel Bruce typically played buffoonish, fuzzy-minded gentlemen. During his film career, he worked in 78 films, including Treasure Island (1934), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), Rebecca (1940), and Suspicion (1941).
Bruce's signature role was that of Dr. Watson in the 1939-1946 Sherlock Holmes film series with close friend Basil Rathbone as Holmes. Bruce starred as Watson in all 14 films of the series and over 200 radio programs of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
Previously:
About halfway to Riverville, Scott phoned Carl Hendersen.
As soon as Carl heard Scotts voice, he interrupted. “Scott, are you OK? I heard, on the news last night, about Nunsay’s arrest and you being wounded.”
“It’s just a scratch, Carl. I’m fine and on my way to Riverville. I want to talk Hurley first and then to you and the chief, as well as Henry Reichmann regarding Somerville. I think it’s time to clean them out. Between The info Sullivan sent me, whatever we can get out of Hurley and anything Chief Grant has, we should be able to do a thorough job of it.”
“Looking forward to it, Scott. I’ll alert the chief and Reichmann that you are on your way. By the way, Hurley has been silent. I think he figures we don’t have much on him, but he is obviously scared to death – doesn’t eat much and paces around in his cell all the time.”
“Then we have a big surprise for him,” Scott said with a chuckle.
What would the SHPC Gazette be without Ernie? I guess there is something to be said about being retired and having plenty of time to explore your hobbies and favorite pastimes. Here is a site he told me about that I hadn't hear about but it's been around for a number of years. Possibly you've never heard of it either. If not, I hope you enjoy it.
The Briar Report (www.briarreport.com) was founded in 2016 to be the premier source of pipe & cigar smoking news and information. In the time since we have lived up to that description. In 2018 we began publication of our online magazine. The magazine is a place where we, as well as our readers, can publish articles and reviews that are of interest to pipe smokers. Also on the site we have an Events calendar and plenty of YouTube Pipe Community Information. In 2019 brtv was added to the lineup. A network of content creators bring you the best pipe and cigars shows on the web. Information on these shows can be found in our weekly publication, The BRTV Guide.
