President's Message - June 2019

Howdy Gang,

I hope everyone is having a great Spring and hopefully you are able to get outside and enjoy some of this nice weather we have been experiencing. It just occurred to me that it only rained twice last week here. Once for four days and once for 3 days. I have spoken with Mike Ponte and he is on the mend. I have tried to reach out to Joe Travis numerous times, and I have never received a call back. Dennis has been very busy with work and hopefully we will see him in June.  Dennis has also been very busy with Nelson (remotely) working on updating our web site which as you can see we are debuting this month. Please bear in mind that this is still a work in progress and we will continue to make tweaks and add additional content over the next year.  We hope you enjoy the new format that works well on all devices. This project has taken both Dennis and Nelson many man hours behind the scenes to bring this project forward. They should both be commended for their hard work and dedication to the club.

For those not in attendance last month, we had a sample of the 30-year anniversary pipe present at the meeting. I must say it is much more impressive in person than in the photos provided. Those who did not order one I think there is still time to get one. Updated photos have been posted to the Facebook group.

Last month I had a few extra pennies to spend and I have been on the hunt for a 2012 Dunhill pipe to commemorate my daughters’ birth. I started to put together a family date set a couple of years ago and have filled in my parents and brothers. Now I am moving on to the wife and kids. Checking some online resources, I came upon a beautiful shape 134 (straight brandy) and just had to have it. I purchased the pipe from smokingpipes.com along with some tobacco and some needed accoutrements. A couple of days later I received the tracking info and noticed that the package was in Myrtle Beach UPS facility. I said to myself, “whoa, whoa, whoa! I am going to Myrtle Beach at the end of the week, could smoking pipes be close by? Wonder if they will give a tour?” So, I immediately got online and googled their address and was delighted to find out they were less than 20-minute drive from where I was staying. I reached out via the website “talk to a rep now feature” and was connected with a customer service rep named Chris Panos who aided me in setting up a tour. When I arrived, I was greeted by Chris who happens to be a transplant from New Hampshire! He gave me a grand tour of this amazing facility and was an extremely gracious host. I got the sense immediately that this company is truly dedicated to the pipe smoker and it’s not just a business. Everyone there is passionate about pipe smoking. Most had briars dangling and smoking is encouraged in their cubes as well as through out the entire facility. I wanted to purchase something to commemorate my visit, but I could not because that place is set up for online sales. However, Chris explained to me that they had a retail location about an 8-minute drive away. He directed me to Low Country Pipe & Cigar a well-appointed store where I purchased 2 pipes and some tins of tobacco. If you ever find yourself in the Myrtle Beach area both places are certainly worth a visit.

The month of June brings us The Queens Birthday. Queen Elizabeth II has reigned over England for a very long time and had her coronation on June 2, 1953 is commonly referred to as the Queen's Birthday. so, all those who smoke an English pipe during the meeting will receive an extra raffle ticket for a chance to win a prize from my personal collection.

See you Tuesday,

Kevin
