President's Message March 2019

Happy “almost” Spring,

Want to start off by letting everyone know that we received a warm welcome as always from our friends of the Fall River Chapter and John from the Old Firehouse Smoke Shop on International Pipes Smoking Day. Tim, Neil, Tom and myself enjoyed a couple of hours with our brothers and I think everyone also went home with a raffle prize and some great purchases. There was plenty of tobacco to sample and John's hospitality once again was second to none.

March brings us just some general discussion about the club and as a side note the folks from Fall River are extremely interested in lending a hand and participating in the pipe show. We have a confirmation from John and Robert Clark (pipe maker) that they are interested in a table. I think it’s time to firm up a date and get the ball rolling. There seems to be a lot of interest. More than we might realize. Also, at this meeting we will be having our nominations for club officers for the ensuing year. Offices up for nomination are: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Scribe and Coffee boy. Although the club appears to have great people in those positions already it’s never a bad idea for the good of the club to keep fresh bodies and fresh ideas into those key positions to keep the club moving forward. Please consider running for office. Remember, this is everyone’s club, and everyone has a say in what happens.

I am sitting here with a newly acquired Davidoff ¼ bent apple and because of the frigid temperatures outside and my current overwhelming work load, I felt like I needed something in the bowl with a little more complexity to it. Sort of like reaching for a strong tea or black coffee. It just adds to the comfort on a cold night. So, this evening I decided to crack a can of Dunhill London Mixture because I think it’s the perfect rich tobacco to satisfy my craving. For those of you who read any of these messages or spend anytime talking with me about tobacco will know I am not a lover of Latakia. (DSW as I like to refer to it) London Mixture to me is the perfect balance of primarily well matured Virginia and Orientals with just a trace of Latakia. And packs just enough punch. Which made me think about a conversation I had with JP last year or longer regarding tongue bite and the flavor of different types of tobacco we choose to smoke. He brought up a good point which I constantly think about while smoking and in my opinion sums up much of the tongue bite / fast smoking debate. It went something like this, “Do we get tongue bite or smoke too fast when we are trying to get more flavor from our tobacco or are we smoking too fast searching for the flavor?” Interesting to ponder either way. I know I am guilty of both from time to time. Either I can’t get enough of it or I’m pushing too hard seeking it. In any event it might be a good topic to expand upon at one of our sit downs in the near future. For the record I am slowly sipping this DLM enjoying every wisp of it.
I would like to wish all my green loving, beer drinking, boiled potato eaten brethren a very happy and safe St. Patrick’s Day. May the wind be at your back and may you never be behind someone’s wind.
Smoke a Peterson at the meeting and you might win a year’s supply of Corned beef Sandwiches or something cool.

All my best - Kevin
