Details from the August Club Meeting

Another quiet summer meeting at the Massapaug Sportman's Club. I say quiet but intimte and allows everyone to join into the same conversation. It's never a bad time when when had amidst clouds of briar smoke.
Tony kept our whistles wet with a few new growlers of delicious ale from Bog Iron Brewing in Norton, MA. Thanks again Tony. Greatly appreciated.

Tobacco Sampling Galore
Kevin brought a slew of tins by 4th Generation and Comoy's to the August meeting.. Way to many to sample them all so they'll be back in September waiting to be packed into your bowls awating your reviews. A review of Comoy's Cask No. 5 by Ernie Whitenack will be available in the next Gazette. We'd like to thank Dave Mooney from Phillips & King for supplying us with this tobacco.

SHPC 2016 Club Pipes
We are still waiting on the prototype of our 2016 pipe by Premal Cheda. We're told that once the ok is given to move forward it won't take long to produce the pipes.

A Big Thanks to Ernie!!!
If it wasn't for him, the SHPC Gazette would pretty much end here.

Invisible Enemy - A short story by Ernie Whitenack

From the Intro....
Hitler’s hidden diamonds and gold were allocated to fund a secret organization. It was a terrorist group known as Werwolf (Werewolf) who would disrupt and confuse the Allied occupation, and planned to overthrow the Allies, and then carry the fight to the East and Soviet Russia.

Chapter 9
.... The special telephone, in a secret compartment in Erich Graff’s desk, uttered its distinctive ring. Graff, in the kitchen of their modern reproduction of a seventeen-hundred’s Alpine Chalet, dropped the carrot he was peeling and moved quickly. He retrieved the phone from its hiding place and flipped the switch on the attached scrambler.

“This is Stahlmann. What have you learned from Mittenwald, Graff?
We are getting a lot of pressure here to either confirm or reject that a Hitler treasure is hidden or buried there.”

“So far that is not possible. I have told our people working on the treasure question to put more effort into finding out. I’m told more searchers are showing up weekly and it is difficult to be discrete or to camouflage our efforts.

Tobacco Reviews...................... by Ernie Whitenack

Gawith Hoggarth & Co.: Balkan Mixture

My winnings from the raffle earlier this year.

“Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. takes the finest Virginia, Turkish, and Oriental tobaccos and expertly blend them with Latakia to give the smoker a unique taste and aroma for this Balkan Mixture.”

Sounds interesting, doesn’t it. And it is.
The oblong tin was a bit difficult to open due to a plastic gasket that sealed the box closed; not news I guess to GH tinned tobacco users. The tobacco comes encased in a square-corned plastic bag at a nice moisture level.

Balkan Mixture is black, toasted I assume, with a strong tobacco odor and Latakia overtones. To my tongue, it is as strong as it smells and tastes predominately of Latakia, the Virginia being hardly noticeable I believe the nicotine level is high.

If the above features appeal to you then I say try it. However, it is not my cup of tea.

Around the Web

New FDA tobacco rules appear to ban cigar donations to troops (excerpt from
Photos of smiling U.S. troops, clutching cigars in their hands or teeth, are tacked to the fabric walls. American flags that flew over outposts in Iraq and Afghanistan, now folded into tight triangles and mailed as tokens of gratitude, are perched on a ledge. A plaque from a U.S. Army sergeant thanks Taylor and her employer for "bringing us closer to home."

The century-old cigar retailer has donated cigars to American troops since World War I. And Taylor, whose title is international control buyer, has been in charge of the company's donations since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
