Info & Events
the September & October Meetings New
club members, new club pipes and more new club members. The September
and October meetings both brought in new members and if you can
believe it, Kevin was only responsible for half of them. I knew
he would have to reach the bottom of the barrel sooner or later.
But no matter how we get them, it always a good thing.
In September we ran into Tucker at CB Perkins or should I say he
ran into us.. Tucker hails from Brockton and makes his living as
a social worker. Also in September, Kevin introduced us to Felix,
another Rhode Islander. Felix is a Dominican who, if you can believe
it, likes pipes. Who woulda guessed? He is also a talented artist
who works for the Providence Water Dept.
In October JP joined us. JP is originally from
New York and a member of the NY Pipe Club but is living in Mass
for a change of pace and working as a business mediator. We agreed
not to talk sports but I wonder if he caught the Pats/Jets came
this past Sunday. And last, but definitely not least, Mike another
of Kevin's entourage. Mike is retired and spends a lot of time as
a scout leader in his son's Boy Scout troop. Kevin brought in nine
new members this year which I think will all but close the lid on
SHPC's Inagural Club Card Competition. More on that below.
New Club Pipes!
Did I say new club pipes? Why, yes I did. The 2015 SHPC Club Pipes
by Icharus are in and were distributed at the October meeting. The
pipes are beautiful and smoke well but I must admit, they were a
tad smaller than any of us were expecting. But we were so caught
up in moment of it all that we forgot to take a group photo. So
to the 5 of you who have read this far down the page, please bring
our club pipe to the meeting with you so we can get a group photo.
2015 Club Card Reminder As
announced in the January Gazette, we started a new initiative whose
primary goals were to encourage member participation and increase
membership. The member with the most punches in November will receive
a $200 gift certificate to an online tobacco merchant at the holiday
meeting in December. So with the holiday meeting just around the
corner I wanted to remind our members of the terms and conditions
of paticipation in this year's holiday meeting. They can be found
in the last two paragraphs on this
page. Please take another look at it.
New Short Story by Ernie Whitenack
the Intro.... Hitler’s hidden diamonds and gold were allocated
to fund a secret organization. It was a terrorist group known as
Werwolf (Werewolf) who would disrupt and confuse the Allied occupation,
and planned to overthrow the Allies, and then carry the fight to
the East and Soviet Russia.
Chapter 2 ... After a short stint at Fort Benning, Clancy found himself
at the Pentagon in a meeting consisting of men from all service
branches. They were selected to be the nucleus of a special branch
of the OSS to be known as Section “P”, nicknamed the
“Platoon” by its members. Immediately following an accelerated
and arduous training period, Clancy went on assignment. In uniform,
he was assigned to various government bureaus and departments on
the pretext of being liaison to the military. In fact, he was performing
counter espionage by ferreting out Axis and Communist sympathizers
and agents. His greatest hindrance was crossing paths with bumbling
F.B.I. agents who seemed to be everywhere.(Read

- William Faulkner
(from Wikipedia...) Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20, 1889 –
September 28, 1953) was an American astronomer who played
a crucial role in establishing the field of extragalactic
astronomy and is generally regarded as one of the most important
observational cosmologists of the 20th century.
In his younger days, he was noted more for his athletic prowess
than his intellectual abilities, although he did earn good
grades in every subject except for spelling. Edwin was a gifted
athlete playing baseball, football, basketball, and he ran
track in both high school and college.
Hubble volunteered for the United States Army and was assigned
to the newly created 86th Division. He rose to the rank of
major and was found fit for overseas duty on July 9, 1918,
but the 86th Division never saw combat. After the end of World
War I, Hubble spent a year in Cambridge, where he renewed
his studies of Astronomy
Hubble's findings in 1922-1923 fundamentally changed the
scientific view of the universe. Supporters of Hubble's expanding
universe theory state that Hubble's discovery of nebulae outside
of our galaxy helped pave the way for future astronomers.
Although some of his more renowned colleagues simply scoffed
at Hubble's idea of an expanding universe, Hubble ended up
publishing his findings on nebulae. This published work earned
him an award titled the American Association Prize and five
hundred dollars from Burton E. Livingston of the Committee
