Details of the April Meeting
Our occasional change of pace had us meeting at the Sportsman's Club for the April meeting rather than our regular location. Many of the usual suspects met up at Perkins for the pre meeting smoke and dinner at Subway, which seems to be the norm lately. The meeting at the Sportsman's club was pretty laid back, no one partook in darts, billiards or shooting this month. But whether we're 5 strong or 20 strong it's always a good to get together. And Pete has been supplying us lately with some nice Scotch blends so who can really complain.

Ok guys, this is it. We gave everyone a extra month but now it's time to pay up. At least half the cost of the pipe is due by the May meeting (but we'll glady take the whole amount). $84 for pipe alone, $125 for pipe with stand. Remember, if you can't make the meeting you need to send us your check. The address was sent via email. If all goes well, we will have the pipes for the July meeting.

More Hoopla about DPE
It seems as though Ernie is not the only one who misses the old DPE blend from Ehrlich's Tobacco shop in Boston. His recent review has spurred a few emails from other fans trying to reproduce this obviously magical blend. Here's some of what's being said:

Greetings, all,

I am located in Istanbul, close to the source of supply of meerschaum pipes, but far from Leavitt & Pierce, am old undergraduate haunt. I do get back to Mass. Ave. once in a while, but to my chagrin, I have discovered that the new DPE is a very pale shadow of the old. Perusal of the web has confirmed that there are plenty of other DPE loyalists who feel the same disappointment.

Is there any interest in recreating the original DPE formula? Is anyone trying to do so? It deserves to live!

Although I live too far away to attend a meeting (Vermont), I enjoy looking at your website. Like Mr. Whitenack I’m an old fan of DPE, in fact I have about a pound of it that I’ve had squirreled away for years! In terms of recreating it, I’ve had pretty good luck combining half a pound of Peretti’s BPC with two ounces of their Virginia flake and about an ounce of latakia, also from Peretti’s. After letting it sit for a month or two I think he’ll find it remarkably similar to the old DPE. The cut is slightly different as only the BPC is a cube cut, but the flavor is pretty close. Keep up the good work!
The scandal of Leavitt & Pierce's fake DPE, and the quest of worthies like Ernie for the real thing have become an international issue, given that this New Hampshireman is operating out of northern Istanbul. My last packet of "DPE" from L&P sits unused on the shelf, along with my small collection of forlorn pipes, waiting in vain for something like the real thing.

I was very encouraged by your assertion that your Peretti formula comes close to the taste that we sorely miss. I look forward to Ernie's evaluation of it. Meanwhile, I hope that you will keep your cache of the real thing under lock and key. Perhaps it will be possible to do a chemical analysis of this treasure and find some means of replicating it. A world without real DPE is a sad place; shame on L&P for its mendacity!
