Info & Events
Hello Brothers in Briar!
all are enjoying this unseasonably warm weather we have been experiencing
and using the time to get outside and enjoy a pipe or two.
We were very busy at our February meeting and besides taking in
our usual commraderie with pipe and leaf we have tabled a motion
to explore future possibilities of opening up another chapter of
the SHPCB on the South Shore in Fall River. It was asked of us by
some people who casually meet at The Old Fire House Smoke Shop who
would like to form a more permanent regularly formed meeting. They
have proposed to gather on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. They will
have a chapter president, secretary and treasurer. They will abide
by and follow our by-laws. There is a lot of content to discuss
if we vote for the approval of this formation. We may even consider
re-working the by-laws and I would like to know if anyone would
like to volunteer for the task of looking over what we have and
how we may improve on it. It may be a bit of work in the beginning
but imagine if we could get 6 or 7 chapters located throughout New
England. The Freemasons, the Knights of Columbus and many other
organizations do it so I feel it might be something to consider
to keep our hobby alive. I can’t stress it enough that your
participation in the discussion and vote on this subject is very
important. Remember this is YOUR club and YOU have a vote.
We had a very nice turn out at the Old Fire House Smoke Shop for
International Pipe Smoking Day. John is a gracious host along with
extending special discounts in celebration of “Our Day”.
This month we will have a special guest. Joyce Beck Regional Sales
Manager from Scandinavian Tobacco Group Lane Ltd. will be joining
us for a tobacco blending demonstration. In April we will have a
group tasting of tobacco that Tom Nyzio has procured. May will bring
us a visit from Jarrid Trudeau Vice President of Kristoff Cigars
and will discuss some of the changes going on in the industry. In
June we have Dave Mooney sales rep with Phillips and King who distribute
Erik Stokkebye, Comoy’s and many other fine brands. In June
we are also planning a cook out at the club as well as a pipe and
Don’t forget March is the time for the annual Petersons Trunk
Show at the Humidor in Cranston Rhode Island. Over 100 Petersons
Pipes will be on display as well as others from the shops inventory.
This is a really good time and a nice discount is included for all
purchases. It will take place on Saturday March 18th from 10 AM
See you Tuesday,
- A short story by Ernie Whitenack
Hitler’s hidden diamonds and gold were allocated
to fund a secret organization. It was a terrorist group known as
Werwolf (Werewolf) who would disrupt and confuse the Allied occupation,
and planned to overthrow the Allies, and then carry the fight to
the East and Soviet Russia.

.... Clancy could do little but extract the 45 from its holster
and hurriedly plot a tree-to-tree path of escape. There was little
else in the clean flat forest for protection. If he can maintain
the same distance from his assailant, it would be difficult to hit
a moving target through a scope. He made the run to the next tree
large enough to hide behind safely and was about to start for the
second tree in his escape rout when the silence was interrupted
by a short machine gun bursts off to his left.
the Sands & Raven's Blend
By Horace Harker
recently downloaded a free audio book from iTunes called Riddle
of the Sands by Erskine Chlders. I like reading sea stories
and this one was recommended. The story takes place back in 1903
where two Englishmen on a sailing holiday in the Baltic uncover
information that shows signs of a German invasion of Great Britain.
In chapter two the yacht's owner Davies sends a letter to his
mate Carruthers asking if he wants to join him on a yachting holiday
and if so could he please bring with him a pound of Raven's Mixture.
Before long they are at sea and enjoying their pipes and cigars
while tryin to uncover this mystery. If you like Ernie's stories
this one is very reminiscent of those.
Unfortunately, the storyline was a little weak and the smoking
references scarce but if you like stories about the sea and sailing
ships you may still enjoy it. I think we should give it to Ernie
for a rewrite.
I decided to look into Raven's Mixture to see what I could find
and learned, that others had done the same. Initially it was thought
to be a reference to Craven Mixture by the Carreras Tobacco Company
but was later discovered by Tim Wright during a trip to James
J. Fox tobacconists in London, that the blend was in fact a real
blend but like Craven Mixture is no longer available. The tobacconist
at JJ Fox told Tim, the closest thing he had to it would be Radford’s
Luxury Blend and contained Virginia, a small amount of Latakia
the audio book: Riddle of the Sands is in the public domain and
free to everyone. If you don't have an iTunes account or can't
find this free audio book with your non iPhone smartphone account.
You can download this and many other public domain audiobooks
from Librivox.org. If you'd rather read than listen to a book,
you will also find links to a number of text versions on the same
Here is what is in store
for this month's tobacco raffle.
Dunhill Ready Rubbed (50g tin)
latest re-release from Dunhill, their Ready-Rubbed starts out
a sweet Virginias and fragrant Orientals. The superb leaf is lightly
imbued with a soft fruit essence and is then heated, pressed and
sliced in the classic Cavendish method. The result is a mildly
sweet blend with pleasant gentle room-note that can be enjoyed
at any time of day.
Dunhill Ye Olde Signe (50g tin)
Ye Olde Signe is a blend that Dunhill had discontinued decades
ago, and it begs the question "Why?"
Ye Olde Signe is a richly fermented, straight Virginia in a fine
ribbon cut. The process used to produce the tobacco creates a
natural tea-like tin aroma and results in a natural-tasting tobacco
that has a mellow sweetness and subtle aroma. In spite of the
gentle flavor, this is a very robust blend best enjoyed after
a meal. See for yourself why so many long time Dunhill fans consider
this one of their very finest.
