Treasurer's Report for February: by Richard Frederics
This is the second "Treasurer's Report" for the newsletter I have written , which, like the first one, really has nothing to do with our finances. But as before, our Secretary, Nelson, had a prior commitment and could not attend our last meeting and so I was asked to fill in and write something about our last meeting.

As I am sitting here smoking my Mac Queen Ranger Pipe (very much into Lord of the Rings) I am also reflecting on our last meeting. I can write that nothing unusual happened - nothing exciting or newsworthy and that would be it - done! But that would be inaccurate. Every meeting is exciting. Once a month a group of guys (12-15) get together smoke and share thoughts or experiences that have happened to them during the past month. This is what we do every month and that is what makes the Sherlock Holmes Pipe Club so special. We enjoy each and everyone's company. We enjoy talking to each other, smoking together - having a good time.

Before we know it, the time has flown by and if it wasn't for the fact that it is a work night we would probably stay much much later. But we know that the next meeting is only a month away and we hope the time flies by until then.

Our members are interested in cooking, we have a pipe-maker, a perfume maker and a tobacco blender, we have a member who refurbishes old cars, one who works in his bicycle shop, a sailing enthusiast, and a lot of interests in various spirits from scotch, whiskey, cognac to beer. We have gun enthusiasts, a photographer and someone in the theater. Is there any other reason that I say, "we do have very special meetings every month."

We have a great group of guys and if you are someone reading this newsletter who smokes a pipe and is looking for a good time, I invite you to join us. I can assure you, you will not be disappointed.

Here's looking forward to seeing all my smoking friends at the next meeting.

Theerrrrrre Heeerrrrrrrre!!!!!
Tim, Neil and I took a ride up to Cup O Joe's in Queensbury, NY eariler this month to meet up with Peder Jepsen of Neerup Pipes and to pick up the 2013 club pipes that he made for us. Wait 'til you seem 'em folks, they're beautiful. We had a great day despite 8+ hrs of driving (thanks Tim) but we'll fill you in on all the details in the next newsletter. The best part of it all is that we get to hand out the pipes at the March meeting. So if you purchased one, be sure to come to the meeitng and pick it up. If you can't make it, don't worry, we'll hold onto it for you.... maybe.
Pipe Smoking in the Movies

Tim Holt, western star of the 30s and 40s, smoked a pipe in the 1939 film Stagecoach Kid. He made nine B Westerns that year interspersed by a couple of si-fi flicks. He also appeared in The Treasure of Sierra Madre with Bogart and worked well into the 50s. (Sent in by Ernie Whitenack - thanks Ern)

Websites Worth a Look
I encourage you all to check out the list of Pipes Magazine Radio Shows and associate show notes listed above but I wanted to specifically highlight a website associated with episode 22 with Richard Friedman, yachtsman and nautical pipe maker. He owns a yacht charter business in Alaska and collects pipes with a nautical theme. I thought his collection was unique and interesting and wanted to share it here. You might even find a few you recognize.

Tobacco Raffle
This month's raffle is the last of the left over Christmas tobacco. Good luck!

Orlik Golden Sliced (50 gm tin)
A touch of Burley adds zesty new life to the flavor of flue-cured Virginia tobacco. Tobacco cut: Traditional flake slice cut. Tobacco Flavor/Aroma: This attractive, non-aromatic blend encompasses a delectable span of flavor intensities from mild to medium in strength.

SHPC Boston - VR Blend (2 oz bulk)
Simply called "VR", the monogram of Victoria Regina, Queen of England which Holmes adorned his wall with while doing a little indoor revolver practice in his rooms at Baker Street. It also stands for Virginia Rich, a pressed blend of bright, stoved and red Virginias with a touch of unflavored Cavendish and a hint of sweet and spicy perique.
