President's Message

Hey Gang,
What a great turn out we had for the July meeting. I didn’t think we would see so many as we did not meet on our regular night and it was quite uncomfortable out. Figured everyone would be hiding out in the comforts of home with the air conditioning thermostat set to “meat locker”. Most of the regulars were there and we had two new members who have paid their dues and should show up on a consistent basis. I think if the other six that normally attend we would have been out of room. The club is definitely growing, and attendance is steady. What more could we ask for?
Hopefully our pipes should be in for this meeting as well as our new SHPC lapel pins. As always, much thanks go to the guys behind the scenes that make stuff happen. We have already put in motion the think tank for our 2019 POTY. For those who do not know this will be a special pipe. It’s the clubs 30th anniversary and it has been discussed that we do something distinct for this one. Please try and attend and express your ideas and opinions. As always never forget this is your club and any contributions are important.
By the time this reaches you we should also have our club pins. Thanks again to Nelson who took countless hours away from sailing to make this happen. We all know how grumpy he gets when he doesn’t have enough time on the ocean to clear his mind. Also, we have established a new bank account along with all the proper credentials to start to move forward financially. I am excited to see the coffers grow and a monthly financial report. With the addition of a PayPal account I am hoping to beta test the club pin sales on the Facebook group. I think this will act as a good gauge to see if we can generate any income selling “Club Swag”. If the pins, go well maybe we can order some shirts or hats.
Promoting our club and hobby is essential to longevity. I assume the first 30 years have been somewhat easy as it was formed during a time when tobacco was still to some extent tolerable in the eyes of the public and there seemed to be a lot more smokers in general. That being established, we had some talk about the possibility of creating our own yearly pipe themed event much like other pipe clubs do. We have a tentative date of October 2019 for the “Southern New England Pipe Show”. I should have some information on the venue by the time we meet. We have set up a loose committee and hopefully will have 3 or 4 dedicated members by September to spear head this endeavor. In the mean time we all have potential people we know that might be interested in setting up a table at the event. If you get a chance write them down and bring to the next meeting. Let’s make this a great event!
As usual now that you have gotten this far it’s now the time to learn about what its going to take to get one of those extra tickets for the special raffle. August 4th is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. Since I have been on a diet, anyone who brings Tom Nyzio a chocolate chip cookie will get an extra raffle ticket.
I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

The 2018 SHPC Club Pipe Update
As of now we are not sure if the 2018 Club Pipe will be available at the August. We are still waiting for an update. We feel pretty certain that if they are not ready by August it will be September for sure.

THEY'RE HERE!!! - SHPC lapel pins.
The SHPC Lapel Pins are here and they look great. All paid members will receive a pin at the next meeting they attend. Pins will be made avaialble for purchase very soon so keep watching this newsletter and our Facebook page.

Mystery of the Killer Pipe - Chapter 10

“Impress on them that it must be tomorrow.  First, put me through to the Albany office.”
It only took two rings and Malison was immediately connected to the Agent in Charge. “I want a very tight surveillance on Smyth. If absolutely necessary, have the police detain him on some charge or the other, but not for too long. Make sure he doesn’t stray out of town. I want to know immediately if Smyth meets with anyone and when he plans to deliver the pipe to Harlan Abby. The office will know where to reach me at any time. I have a feeling this case is coming to a head soon.”

Tobacco Reviews... By Mike Ponte Surburg's 71st Street - Wilke Pipe Tobacco
A couple of weeks ago I met with our dear leader, President Catanzaro, at my home in Rhode Island. After discussing some business, he reaches into his pocket, saying “I’ve got something for you”. Normally this would elicit some alarm, but upon the sight of a bag of tobacco, I knew I was safe. He produced a sample of “71st Street”, a tobacco by Wilke. He informed me that he picked it up at the Old Firehouse Smoke Shop, home of our appendant SHPC branch. He proceeded to open the package, and once he had done so, this fat man was assailed with the orgasmic aroma of Chocolate, strong Chocolate. Once my salivation had abated, I took a deeper sniff of this concoction. Cocoa was the star, but there were hints of something else - whiskey perhaps.
We sat there several moments trying to identify the exact scents of this blend. It was familiar, reminding me of something specific that I had consumed in the past, but it’s source escaped me. I later sat down and filled a bowl, taking a trip to 71st Street. The tobacco has a fine taste, with the chocolate and some sort of nougat, or perhaps caramel flavor coming through. I had no tongue bite whatsoever as I worked my way down. Being a fast smoker, tongue bite is my ever-present companion, but this day I was spared. I finished my smoke, perfectly contented, as my wife commented on how pleasant my office smelled – a true sign of victory.
A few days later, I was puttering around the house and decided to make a quick breakfast. Unhealthy though they are, I reached for a silver pack of “Pop Tarts”. I proceeded to pop them in my toaster and as they cooked, something struck me. The smell issuing from the toaster was an exact match for 71st street! Yes, as if the Gods of Olympus reached down to bestow a great boon upon us, Wilke Pipe Tobacco has somehow condensed the pure essence of Oreo Pop Tarts into smokable form. Amen.

A. A. Milne (excerpted from Wikipdedia)
Alan Alexander Milne (18 January 1882 – 31 January 1956) was an English author, best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and for various poems. Milne was a noted writer, primarily as a playwright, before the huge success of Pooh overshadowed all his previous work. Milne served in both World Wars, joining the British Army in World War I, and was a captain of the British Home Guard in World War II.
During World War II, Milne was one of the most prominent critics of fellow English writer P. G. Wodehouse, who was captured at his country home in France by the Nazis and imprisoned for a year. Wodehouse made radio broadcasts about his internment, which were broadcast from Berlin. Although the light-hearted broadcasts made fun of the Germans, Milne accused Wodehouse of committing an act of near treason by cooperating with his country's enemy. Wodehouse got some revenge on his former friend (e.g., in The Mating Season) by creating fatuous parodies of the Christopher Robin poems in some of his later stories, and claiming that Milne "was probably jealous of all other writers.... But I loved his stuff.
The rights to A. A. Milne's Pooh books were left to four beneficiaries: his family, the Royal Literary Fund, Westminster School and the Garrick Club. After Milne's death in 1956, one week and six days after his 74th birthday, his widow sold her rights to the Pooh characters to Stephen Slesinger, whose widow sold the rights after Slesinger's death to the Walt Disney Company, which has made many Pooh cartoon movies, a Disney Channel television show, as well as Pooh-related merchandise. In 2001, the other beneficiaries sold their interest in the estate to the Disney Corporation for $350m. Previously Disney had been paying twice-yearly royalties to these beneficiaries. The estate of E. H. Shepard also received a sum in the deal. The UK copyright on the text of the original Winnie the Pooh books expires on 1 January 2027; at the beginning of the year after the 70th anniversary of the author's death (PMA-70), and has already expired in those countries with a PMA-50 rule. This applies to all of Milne's works except those first published posthumously. The illustrations in the Pooh books will remain under copyright until the same amount of time has passed, after the illustrator's death. In the United States, copyright will not expire until 95 years after publication for each of Milne's books first published before 1978, but this includes the illustrations.
In 2008, a collection of original illustrations featuring Winnie-the-Pooh and his animal friends sold for more than £1.2 million at auction in Sotheby's, London. Forbes magazine ranked Winnie the Pooh the most valuable fictional character in 2002; Winnie the Pooh merchandising products alone had annual sales of more than $5.9 billion. In 2005, Winnie the Pooh generated $6 billion, a figure surpassed by only Mickey Mouse

Video of the Month
The Origin of Winnie the Pooh

I love going to local tobacco shops. You never know what you'll find, whether it's great tins that have inexplicably languished on the shelf for years, or popular blends that are often sold out online. This month, we an example of each (and as usual, we'll have aromatics available as alternate selections):

Squadron Leader - Sam Gawith
Squadron Leader from Samuel Gawith is a classic English blend named in honor of the men who flew in the two World Wars. Bright and Dark Virginias are blended with Latakias and Turkish to offer a medium strength smoke with a subtle nutty flavor.

Bill Bailey's Best Blend - Dan Tobacco
Bill Bailey's Best Blend from Dan Tobacco is a cool burning, medium bodied smoke composed of various Virginia grades, Oriental leaf, both Cyprian and Syrian Latakia, unflavored black cavendish, and perique tobaccos, all expertly blended to provide the ultimate in smoking pleasure. While still available (at least in Europe), our raffle tin is an estimated seventeen years old.
